Hubballi: Healthcare, infrastructurewater supply and agriculture were among the areas that chief minister Basavaraj Bommai’s maiden budget speech focussed on while he outlined his vision for the overall development of North Karnataka.
In order to ease access to quality healthcare for the underprivileged, Bommai allocated a sum of Rs 250 crore for setting up a regional centre of the Jayadeva Institute of Cardiology in Hubballi. The CM also proposed launching mobile healthcare clinics under the ‘Mukyamantri Arogya Vahini’ initiative in Bidar and Breakdown districts. In his constituency, Shiggaon in Haveri district, the CM said that the general hospital would be upgraded to a 250-bed facility. In a further boost for the healthcare sector in North Karnataka, Bommai proposed setting up an Ayush Ayurveda College in Savanur, besides allocating funds to double the capacity of ESI hospitals in Hubballi and Davanagere from the existing 50 to 100 beds.
As part of the government’s efforts to help farmers market their produce better, the CM proposed branding the tur dal grown in Kalaburagi and Yadgir districts ‘Bhima Pulse’. N K’taka the new education hub?
The lack of premier educational institutions for higher learning has been a pet peeve among the residents of North Karnataka for long. On Friday, CM Bommai sought to address this lacuna: From a new government medical college in Chitradurga, an agriculture college in Ballari to the proposal to set up as many as seven new model universities in Bidar, Haveri, Koppal and Bagalkot districts, his maiden budget speech hinted at transforming the region into a veritable hub for higher education in the near future.
Meanwhile, to ease mobility woes in the region, bypass roads have been proposed in Maski, Sindhnur, Gadag and Yadgir towns. The CM also announced that a proposal would be submitted to the central government to undertake work on the 55-kilometre long railway line between Gadag and Yalavagi, which is estimated to cost Rs 640 crore. Bommai added that the feasibility of setting up airports in Davanagere and Koppal districts would be assessed, and a report submitted.
A Rs 1,000-crore grant for the implementation for Kalasa-Banduri Nala project, and a proposal to draw water from the Kali River are expected to ensure supply of sufficient drinking water to the five districts of North Karnataka.
Pointing to the strategic geographic location of Chitradurga, Haveri, Dharwad and Belagavi districts, all of which are connected via the Bengaluru-Chennai-Mumbai highway, Bommai proposed the formulation of ‘Karnataka Special Investment Region Act’ to facilitate industrial growth in the districts. The CM also proposed measures to boost infrastructure in Kalaburagi to promote industrial growth in the district. Bommai announced a special incentive package for the FMCG cluster in Dharwad.
