Chief Justice NV Ramana has asked the number of under-trial prisoners in the country and speedy disposal of pending cases in courts. CJI Ramana said this at the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) 18th National Conference held in Jaipur. He said- Wherever we go, people also ask us the question of the pending case. How long will the case last?

We all know what is the reason for pendency? The main reason for the pendency is the non-filling of judicial vacancies and the lack of improvement in the judicial infrastructure. I raised the issue of infrastructure in the CM-CJ conference, but unfortunately it was not considered. I hope the issue will be reconsidered.

In the conference of NALSA, the issue of costly fees of lawyers and lengthy judicial process also came up loudly.

More than 61 lakh prisoners in the country’s jails
Justice Ramana said – 80% of the prisoners in jails in the country at present are under trial. There are more than 61 lakh prisoners in the country at present. We have to work on their faster release. The process of criminal justice system in our country is the punishment.

NALSA Act is a revolutionary step in this direction. This is a good effort. NALSA has disposed of one crore cases out of five crore pending cases in the country in the last one year. In this our judges have done extra work on Saturdays and Sundays. It is very important for us to keep in mind that the basic spirit of NALSA should not be forgotten.
