The weather department has issued an orange alert for 25 districts in Tamil Nadu including Chennai with heavy rainfall expected in several areas until December 5
Heavy rains continue to lash Chennai on Thursday flooding several low-lying areas in the Tamil Nadu capital. The coastal city will see intense rain along with thunderstorm and lightening today, according to India Meteorological Department (IMD).
The weather department has issued an orange alert for 25 districts in Tamil Nadu including Chennai with heavy rainfall expected in several areas until December 5.
As per the met department, a low-pressure system over the Andaman Sea has moved towards the Bay of Bengal and is likely to develop into a depression. Isolated heavy rain is forecasted for the coastal and adjoining districts.
In view of the heavy rains in Chennai, schools have been closed today (November 30). All schools, colleges, and other educational institutes will also remain shut in the Thiruvallur district, while schools will also remain shut in Chengalpattu, Ranipet, and Kanchipuram districts as well.
The exams scheduled to be held today at Chennai University also stands postponed. The varsity has yet to announce a new date for the exam.
Here are all the latest updates about the weather in Chennai and Tamil Nadu districts:
- The IMD has issued an orange alert for Chennai and its neighbouring districts on December 2 and 3, indicating the likelihood of heavy to very heavy rainfall.
- Several neighbouring districts such as Chengalpattu, Tiruvallur, and Kanchipuram have also been affected due to heavy rains.
- The Meenambakkam and Nungambakkam stations in Chennai received 23 mm and 9 mm of rainfall respectively from 8.30 on Wednesday morning up to 5.30 pm. Cuddalore district received the highest in Tamil Nadu with 26 mm rainfall, according to Hindustan Times.
- Incessant heavy rainfall has causes waterlogging in several parts of Chennai including Arumbakkam area of the city.
- Chief Minister MK Stalin has directed ministers, legislators and representatives of local bodies to provide all necessary support to the people in rain affected areas.
- An IMD official said Chennai and nearby regions in northern coastal Tamil Nadu experienced heavy rainfall on Wednesday, which was in the range of 5 cm-6 cm and even above in some areas.
- Railway sources said ‘there is delay in operation’ in suburban services in view of water logging over railway tracks in the Ambattur-Avadi-Arakkaonam sections. In both arrival and departure of flights, some delay was experienced due to showers, airport sources said. All arrangements are in place to prevent inundation of runways, they added.
