The CBI on Wednesday conducted raids at 16 places across the country in connection with the bribery case related to Kiru Hydro Project in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kishtwar. The then governor of the state, Satya Pal Malik, had alleged that he was offered a bribe in return for awarding the civil work contract for the project.

Following Malik’s allegations, the CBI had registered two FIRs in the corruption case. After this, the investigating agency raided 14 places in Jammu and Kashmir, including the residence of Naveen Chaudhary, an IAS officer in April.

The Kiru project to be built on the Chenab river in Kishtwar district of Jammu and Kashmir has a target of generating 624 MW of electricity.

Malik accused of corruption in 2021
Satyapal Malik said in a program in Jhunjhunu, Rajasthan on October 17, 2021 that he was offered bribe of crores while the governor of Jammu and Kashmir. During that time two files came to him. Among them was a big industrialist and the other Mehbooba Mufti and a person who was a minister in the BJP’s coalition government. Malik had said that he canceled both the deals after his secretaries told him that there was a scam.

Rs 300 crore offered for two files
Malik, the current governor of Meghalaya, had said that he was offered Rs 150-150 crore for both the files. Malik said, ‘I had said that I have come with five kurta-pyjamas and will leave here with only that.’ He had said that when the CBI asks, I will also tell the names of the offerers.

CBI registers FIR in two different cases
CBI had registered two FIRs in this case. The first FIR pertains to alleged corruption in the issuance of contracts worth around Rs 60 crore. This amount was taken as a bribe from an insurance company for awarding the contract for Jammu and Kashmir Employees Health Care Insurance Scheme in 2017-18.

The second FIR pertains to corruption in awarding a contract worth Rs 2,200 crore for civil works of Kiru Hydro Electric Power Project (HEP) to a private firm in 2019. CBI is probing both these cases.

Satya Pal Malik is the Governor of Meghalaya, but he has surrounded the central government on many issues.
