CBI raid on Brother Tirkey’s residence in Jharkhand: Raids on 18 locations across the country; Action on scam in 34th National Games

The CBI on Thursday raided the residence of former Jharkhand Sports Minister Bandhu Tirkey at Morhabadi and Banhora in Ranchi. In the famous 34th National Sports Scam, this action is going on in about 18 places across the country. The Patna team of CBI has reached Ranchi for raids. An official of Patna Range said that action is being taken on instructions from Delhi Head Quarter. According to the information till now, the search operation is going on at 12 places in Jharkhand, 2 in Patna, 2 in Delhi and 2 in Noida.

Apart from Bandhu Tirkey, raids have been conducted at the places of all the accused related to the scam. The team scrutinized the papers at the residence of the former MLA till 4 pm. The team took some papers with them. Sources are claiming that the brother Tirkey was asked to appear before the inquiry committee for questioning. The team officials spoke to the former MLA over phone. The former MLA assured to cooperate in the investigation.

Bandhu Tirkey, who lost his assembly membership after being convicted in a disproportionate assets case, is currently in Delhi. After the end of his membership, the by-election has also been announced for the Mandar assembly seat on June 23.

On April 22, two separate FIRs were registered in the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) of the CBI in the National Sports Scam. The investigating officers of both the FIRs were made of two officers of the ACB of the CBI in Patna. The 34th National Games was held in Jharkhand from February 22 to February 26 in the year 2011. There is an allegation of scam during this event.

The whole scam is of Rs 28.34 crore, it involves purchase of sports goods at high price without tender and many other cases. On the other hand, the second case is of irregularities in the construction of Mega Sports Complex, whose budget was increased from Rs 206 crore to Rs 424 crore.

Financial irregularities in construction of squash court on Bandhu Tirkey Blame
Former Sports Minister Bandhu Tirkey is accused of financial irregularities in the construction of two squash courts in Dhanbad. The responsibility of building the squash court was given to a Mumbai based company, Xyrex Enterprises. The company had given an estimate of Rs 1,44,32,850. On this proposal, the file was sent to the then Departmental Minister (Sports Minister) Bandhu Tirkey after the recommendation of Organizing Committee General Secretary SM Hashmi and the then Sports Director and Secretary. Taking a policy decision, Bandhu Tirkey approved it on 20 October 2008. In this, an advance of Rs 50 lakh was given to the company, but later it was confirmed that the financial irregularity was due to payment without approval.

On the orders of the High Court, two FIRs have been registered by the CBI in the case related to the National Sports Scam. The first case in this is related to irregularities in the construction of RC 0242022A001 Mega Sports Complex, which is registered against unknown people.

On the other hand, the second case is RC 0242022A002, which is related to the scam related to sports events. Earlier, the Anti Corruption Bureau was investigating the matter. In which the brothers Tirkey were also arrested and a charge sheet was also filed against them. The bureau had made Bandhu Tirkey the primary accused in the case.

Bandhu Tirkey was elected MLA from Mandar assembly seat in Ranchi district. After this he got a government residence in Morhabadi, Ranchi. After the information of the raid, there has been a gathering of media outside the residence of the former MLA.
