Maryam Nawaz allegedly received almost 1,000 emails, from parents of students and even alumni, asking her “not to attend” the event at Aitchison College in Lahore

Scores of attendees were seen shouting slogans against Punjab Chief Minister and ruling Pakistan Muslim League (N) leader Maryam Nawaz, and in support of jailed Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Imran Khan, as she attended an event at Aitchison College in Lahore. CNN-News18 has exclusively accessed the video footage.

Nawaz was the chief guest at the event. She allegedly received almost 1,000 emails, from parents of students and even alumni of the prestigious institute, asking her “not to attend” the event. They apparently said that “thieves can’t be accepted as chief guests” of such prestigious events.

They also started shouting slogans — ‘Tera Yaar, Mera Yaar Qaidi number 804’ — for Khan, who is prisoner number 804 in Adiala Jail. Khan was recently attacked by three Afghanis, according to CTD Punjab.

CNN-News18 had earlier reported how people had shouted similar slogans in support of Khan at the Premier Match opening.

Nawaz, who scripted history when she became the first woman to occupy the post in any province of Pakistan, on Friday said she had to work “quite hard” for more than a decade to make space for herself in the ruling PML-N, a party founded by her father Nawaz Sharif.

Meanwhile, the Islamabad High Court has ordered the Adiala Jail authorities to permit only those individuals to meet imprisoned former prime minister Imran Khan whose names have been approved by him, a media report said on Saturday.

Khan and senior party leader and former foreign minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi, 67, have been lodged at the high-security Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi in various cases. Last month, Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi, were sentenced to seven years imprisonment in an “un-Islamic” marriage or Iddat case. In January, the PTI founding chairman and his wife were sentenced to 14 years imprisonment each for corruption on charges of illegally selling state gifts. Earlier, Khan was also sentenced to 10 years in prison by a special court for leaking sensitive state secrets. Khan and Qureshi were also handed down a jail term of 10 years in the cipher case. Khan was ousted through a vote of no-confidence in April 2022. More than 150 cases have been registered against him since his ouster from power. Khan has also been disqualified from holding any public office for 10 years.
