Neymar left the pitch on a stretcher after receiving treatment for several minutes during the 2026 World Cup qualifier between Brazil and Uruguay.

Brazil forward Neymar left their 2026 World Cup qualifier against Uruguay in tears on Tuesday after suffering what appeared to be a serious knee injury.

The 31-year-old went down after a tackle from behind by Nicolas de la Cruz in the 44th minute, holding his left leg in pain and calling for medical attention as his team mates looked on anxiously.

He left the pitch on a stretcher after receiving treatment for several minutes. Brazil FA sources said Neymar had sustained a severe left knee sprain and that he would undergo tests to determine if there was ligament damage.

Darwin Nunez scored in the 42nd as Nicolas de la Cruz added a second in the 77th as Uruguay beat Brazil 2-0 in Montevideo.

Brazil’s medical team had no immediate update on Neymar’s condition.

Neymar, who plays for Al Hilal of the Saudi Pro League, was criticized by fans before the World Cup qualifier because of his subpar performance during Thursday’s 1-1 draw between host Brazil and Venezuela.

Neymar made his national team debut in 2010 and has 79 goals in 128 appearances for Brazil.
