NAWADA: An undertrial prisoner in Nawada sub-jail has cleared the IIT Joint Admission Test for Masters (JAM) and secured 54th rank at the national level. The prisoner, Suraj Kumar Yadavnurses the ambition of becoming a scientist and contributing to the national development.
Suraj, a murder accused, attributed his success to Nawada jail superintendent Abhishek Pandey who “motivated him to crack the exam and also provided necessary books”.
Pandey also arranged special food for Suraj and guided him personally to clear the exam which was held on February 13 this year. Suraj was granted a month’s parole by the court to take the examination in New Delhi.
Before his arrest, Suraj was studying at Kota in Rajasthan for the entrance examination. Owing to the nationwide lockdown due to Covid-19 in 2021, he returned to his native village Mosma under the Warisaliganj police station area in the district.
Suraj and his elder brother Birendra Yadav have been lodged in Nawada sub-jail since April 2021 for their alleged involvement in the murder of one of their notorious co-villagers and neighbours, Sanjay Yadav.
It is learned that a long-standing dispute over a village drain between Suraj’s father Arjun Yadav and Sanjay’s father Baso Yadav led to the murder. Renu Devi, the mukhiya of Mosma panchayat, however, said Suraj was “implicated” in the case. Suraj’s parents have abandoned the village fearing revenge by the rival group. Their agricultural land lies barren. Suraj is hopeful of joining IIT-Roorkee once he is released.
