Thiruvananthapuram: Environment protection group Thanal trust is conducting a one-day bicycle pedalling campaign against chemical pesticides on March 20. The campaign aims at creating awareness in the society about the harmful effects of chemical pesticides and also to promote organic farming, especially among children and youth.
The campaign named as “Pedal against Poison-2022” is being implemented in association with Indus Cycle Embassy (ICE), Pesticide Action Network India and WIWA (Wide Inspiration and Wide Aspiration).
The bicycle rally led by Indus Cycle Embassy will be flagged off from Kanakakunnu Palace at 6.00 am on March 20. The cycling team will visit the organic farms in Thiruvananthapuram. The inauguration ceremony of the campaign will be organized on the same day at State Central Library at 5.00 pm. The event will be attended by artists, social activists, farmers and environmentalists. ‘Polivattam’, a folk art drama conceptualized by the WIWA team will also be performed at the event.
As part of attracting youngsters to the campaign, the organization held several curtain raiser programmes on Sunday at the Napier Museum. Around 120 youngsters took part in the practice session and fun competitions like treasure hunt based on the city and drawing competition. The organization also provided facilities for spot registration. A cash prize of Rs 4,000, Rs 2,000 and Rs 1,000 was presented to the winners. The practice session explained about the bicycle rally under the leadership of Thanal volunteers.
