bhuyan: Police seek more witnesses in Aasu leader lynching case | Guwahati News – Times of India

GUWAHATI: With only nine days to go before the expiry of the deadline given by the Assam chief minister to file the chargesheet in the All Assam Students’ Union (Aasu) Animesh Bhuyan lynching case, the police are faced with a challenge as very few witnesses have turned up.
Jorhat SP Ankur Jain on Sunday said, “A few people have come forward as witnesses but we need more witnesses and evidence. People, who were eyewitnesses, have not come forward yet. I request people to share evidence if anyone has anything related to the lynching just to make the chargesheet strong against the accused. The identity of eyewitnesses will be kept confidential. There is nothing to worry about.”
On November 29, a mob of around 50 lynched Bhuyan in broad daylight following an argument over a road accident. The mob reportedly attacked Bhuyan and his two friends alleging that the trio’s vehicle had hit an elderly man riding a scooter.
However, police said that there was no collision with Bhuyan’s vehicle and the elderly man had fallen from the scooter himself. “He was under the influence of alcohol and created a scene…Bhuyan and two others, who happened to be close by, had rushed to help him but the man started shouting and said that they had run him over. That is when a mob gathered and turned violent,” he added.
The police had arrested a total of 13 people involved in the lynching of whom one accused – Neeraj Das – was allegedly killed in a road accident while trying to flee from police custody.
Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had directed the police to file a strong chargesheet within one month and asked the special DGP (law & order) GP Singh to personally supervise the probe.
Aasu general secretary Sankor Jyoti Baruah on Sunday said, “Nearly 21 days have passed since the incident in Jorhat. The police are still looking for more eyewitness to prepare a strong chargesheet. We do not want any loophole to remain in the chargesheet which may allow the accused to get out of jail without any exemplary punishment.”
Demanding a strong police investigation and a chargesheet against the accused, Baruah appealed to the people of Jorhat, who may have any evidence related to the incident, to come forward to deliver justice to Animesh.
