Banaras Hindu University has reaffirmed its status as one of the top choices for international students seeking higher education in India. The university has reported a total of 312 international students for the academic session 2023-24. With this, the current tally of international students enrolled in the university has reached 734 around 49 different countries.

Among the recently admitted students, 172 have enrolled in undergraduate programs, 112 in postgraduate courses, and 16 are pursuing Ph.D. programs at the university. Additionally, 12 students have gained admission to certificate or diploma courses. Breaking down the composition of the fresh admissions, 253 students fall under the self-financed category, while 49 are sponsored by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR). Additionally, four gained admission through EdCIL and six students were facilitated by the Study in India program.

According to a report by Indian Express, most of the students are from Nepal— 155 individuals enrolling in various programs at Banaras Hindu University. Additionally, the university has welcomed 85 students from Bangladesh, 11 from Sri Lanka, and 10 from Myanmar. In total, students from 30 different countries have registered for various courses at the university. This surge in enrollment is attributed to the university’s proactive efforts to attract more international students.

As per the Vice-Chancellor Prof. Sudhir Kumar Jain, BHU has prioritised enhancing student amenities on campus, including a significant increase in hostel accommodation for international students. Prof. Jain highlighted the positive impact of scholarships for international students on BHU’s global outreach. “We have been able to significantly increase the hostel accommodation for international students. Scholarship for international students is also helping in BHU’s international outreach,” he said.

Presently, Banaras Hindu University accommodates nearly 600 international students, and an upcoming international girls’ hostel, currently under construction, will provide an additional capacity for 400 students. In an official statement, the university emphasised its commitment to streamlining and simplifying the admission process for international students, ensuring a smooth and hassle-free experience. The international centre is actively working to promptly address queries and overcome challenges encountered by both applicants and enrolled students.

Notably, the university has entered into a partnership with EdCIL, a PSU under the Ministry of Education, and is participating in the Study in India (SII) initiatives of the government of India. This collaboration aims to enhance the involvement of foreign nationals in BHU’s admission procedures, further facilitating a smoother experience for prospective international students.
