Congress workers demonstrated on 10 June over the violence during the elections. On the other hand, BJP’s Shubhendu Adhikari raised questions on the date of nomination on 11 June.

There are panchayat elections in West Bengal on 8 July. Candidates have to file nominations by June 15. During this, violent clashes took place in many areas. A Congress worker also died. The opposition parties were alleging that the candidate was not allowed to fill the form.

Now the State Election Commission will hold an all-party meeting on Tuesday. State Election Commissioner Rajeev Sinha will preside over the meeting. The current law and order situation in West Bengal will be reviewed in the meeting. Along with this, complaints regarding elections will be heard.

BJP said – the meeting should have been called earlier
Regarding the dates of the elections, state BJP president Sukanta Majumdar said, the Election Commission should have discussed and decided it first. There is no use of meeting now. He argued that the suggestions of the opposition parties could have been implemented if the meeting had been called earlier.

CPI(M) questions the Election Commission Commissioner
Sujan Chakraborty, a senior CPI(M) leader also criticized the timing of the meeting. It should have been called before the announcement of election dates, he said.

Chakraborty alleged that Sinha was not ready to conduct the elections and claimed that his appointment was aimed at disrupting the entire voting process. On the other hand, Saugata Roy, MP of the ruling party TMC said, we want peaceful elections in the state. Violent incidents have taken place only in a few areas.

Hearing on extension of election date on June 12, HC reserves decision
A hearing was held on Monday in the Calcutta High Court to extend the date of Bengal Panchayat elections. The court has proposed to hold the polls on July 14 instead of July 8. The court suggested extending the date for filing nominations from June 15 to June 18 and the date for withdrawal of nominations from June 26 to June 27.

On this, the counsel appearing for the State Election Commission said that it is not right to extend the date of nomination. It can be extended from June 15 to June 16 at the most. After the completion of the hearing of the case, the court has reserved the verdict.

Congress and BJP had filed petitions
Two public interest litigations were filed in the Calcutta High Court after the dates for the Bengal Panchayat elections were announced. In which some parts of the notification issued by the State Election Commission for the Panchayat elections have been challenged. One petition was filed by state Congress president Adhirranjan Chowdhary and the other by Shubhendu Adhikari.

A Congress worker was shot dead on June 9 in Khadgram, Murshidabad ahead of the panchayat elections to be held in Bengal. Congress MP and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury wrote a letter to the Governor demanding deployment of CRPF in the state. A BJP delegation also met Governor CV Anand Bose and demanded deployment of CRPF for the panchayat elections.

On the other hand, on the second day of the incident i.e. on January 10, Murshidabad police arrested Bashir Mollah, a TMC worker from Domkal area. A pistol was recovered from him. After this, the West Bengal State Election Commission called an all-party meeting on June 13 to discuss the Panchayat elections.
