New Delhi: A Bangladeshi national was lynched to death by people in Jalpaiguri district of West Bengal on Wednesday after he was caught while allegedly trying to steal cows from a house, police said, as reported by news agency PTI. Police officials said that the incident took place in a village bordering Bangladesh. While trying to steal the cow, the villagers caught the Bangladeshi national and was killed by the angry mob.
Three people have been arrested in connection with the incident. The villagers caught him on Wednesday morning after waiting overnight and allegedly thrashed him to death.
According to police, a gang of people from Bangladesh had crossed the border with the intention of theft at Baruapara village in the Kukurjan area of Rajganj block on Tuesday night.
Superintendent of Police Debarshi Dutta said that some people have been arrested in connection with the lynching. Rajganj police station has been asked to investigate the matter.
“Some people have been arrested in connection with the lynching. Rajganj police station has been asked to probe the case,” Debarshi said.
Nripen Roy, whose house was attacked by the gang, said, “When the gang was chased, they fled leaving behind the cows. All of them crossed the border back to Bangladesh, except one. He died after being beaten up. Cows were stolen from our village earlier as well.”
Police said that the deceased has been identified as Md Salam. He said that he was a native of Panchagarh district of Rangpur division of northern Bangladesh.
Earlier, at least 17 cows were rescued from West Bengal’s Purulia district while the animals were allegedly smuggled in a milk delivery van on Tuesday, police said.
