Babbar Movie Review: The movie is more about emotions than action

STORY: ‘Babbar’ is a story about power, family, love, friendship, and emotions. In the film, we see Amrit Maan and Amar Hundal leaving behind their dark lives, the gangsterism, for their family. However, the reason that drove them away from the darkness of the world eventually becomes the reason to drive them back to the same pit hole.

REVIEW: Right from the word go, ‘Babbar’ seemed to be a story revolving around the character of Amrit Maan. However, after watching the film, we can without a doubt say that this is not a sole actor movie; rather, is a cinematic piece in which every character is a hero. Also, the teaser and trailer of the movie gave us the impression that the film is nothing more than an intense action drama, but interestingly enough there’s more to it than what meets the eye.

The movie’s plot revolves around gangsters and their families. It shows two major sections of the dark world, one consists of the people who are in power, and the others are reformed mobsters who choose to stay dormant unless poked. Every character in the film is linked to one another, which we find as the story unfolds gradually.

Now coming to the story, written by Amar Hundal, it is a tightly packed plot, with some unpredictive twists and turns. It keeps you glued to your seats throughout the show. However, there are certain parts, wherein logic is put to test. For instance, Amar Hundal who plays the role of Gamma in the film, his throat is cut severely by his enemies, he sufferers from huge blood loss yet he manages to survive. Nevertheless, scenes like these can be counted on fingers, so no foul no harm.

Another interesting part of the story is showcasing little kids as notorious crooks. Now generally we appreciate child artists for bringing on-screen some innocence, but in ‘Babbar’ the child actors pose as the real game-changers. Amar has tried to show their cuteness and their notorious side in a perfect balance.

Further, it is not just the child actors but every other actor in the movie has done a commendable job. Right from Yograj Singh posing as the Babbar – the most powerful man of the underworld to Raghveer Boli as Cheeka, an innocent young boy in love to Amrit Maan as Joravar, a reformed criminal, every actor has brought a substantial amount of entertainment to the table.

We cannot imagine anyone else than Yograj Singh playing ‘Babbar’. Though he has perhaps the least screen time, he owned the 70mm in that limited period. Similarly, Amrit Maan has shown that as an actor he has so much potential, as his every emotion and dialogue reached the heart. Then the director himself, Amar Hundal, and other stars like Raghveer Boli, Victor John, Pradeep Cheema, and more also did complete justice to their characters.

Now coming to the action of the movie, the scenes are well choreographed. There is not too much bloodshed, but the shots are powerful enough to leave an impact.

Last but not the least, let’s talk about the things that didn’t work for us in the movie. Music plays an important role in Punjabi movies, but in this film, it couldn’t create that magic. Further, we understand that the makers wanted to leave the movie on a cliffhanger, the climax could have been better in terms of the story. In the end, there was a lot of chaos, which could have been justified with a better climax writing.
