Avalanche in Gulmarg, Jammu and Kashmir, 2 foreign tourists killed: 21 people rescued, ski resort buried in snow

An avalanche took place on Wednesday in Gulmarg, a famous tourist place in Jammu and Kashmir. The ski resort got hit by it. Two Polish tourists died in an avalanche. While 21 people have been rescued, 19 were Polish citizens and 2 were local guides.

SSP Baramulla said that as soon as the information about the avalanche was received, the local administration has started the rescue operation. It cannot be said right now how many people are buried under the snow.

This video is during the rescue operation, in which the security personnel are seen handling the avalanche victims after taking them out of the snow.

Baramulla police officials said that the people hit by the avalanche were on the slope when the accident occurred. The bodies of the two Polish nationals who died in the avalanche have been recovered. They have been identified as Krijseltoff, 43, and Adam Grech, 45. Their bodies have been taken to the hospital for the medico-legal process.

On January 29, a woman and a teenage girl were killed in an avalanche in Kargil district of Ladakh. Just two days back, there was heavy snowfall in Jammu and Kashmir. The Jammu-Srinagar highway was closed due to stones and debris falling on the road from the mountains. Although the number of tourists is increasing at the tourist spots wrapped in the sheet of snow. Heavy snowfall occurred in most areas of Jammu and Kashmir on the last day of Chillai Kalan i.e. Sunday.

On January 30, most areas of Kashmir received snowfall.

Due to this, road and air traffic has been disrupted. Traffic has come to a standstill on the Jammu-Kashmir National Highway. The train service between Baramulla-Banihal is currently stalled. Air traffic at Srinagar airport is currently suspended. The possibility of heavy snowfall, rain and storm has been expressed for the next 12 hours.
