Defense Minister Rajnath Singh says that the election process will start in Jammu and Kashmir by the end of this year. The Defense Minister was addressing a program on the occasion of the 200th anniversary of the coronation of Maharaja Gulab Singh. He said that the process of delimitation in Jammu and Kashmir has been completed. Now there are 90 seats in Jammu and Kashmir, 43 in Jammu and 47 assembly seats in Kashmir. He said that the Election Commission has started amendment in the voter list in the Union Territory. The draft roll will be ready by August 31. Two days later, that is, till August 2, 2022, information about the date of assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir can be revealed. Defense Minister said that PoK and Gilgit, Baltistan are under illegal occupation of Pakistan. The separatist forces would not have been so strong if there had not been a step-motherly treatment of Jammu and Kashmir after the merger. The seeds of hatred are being sown here, for which the neighboring country has an important role.

Article 370 was removed in 2019
Assembly elections are going to be held for the first time after the abrogation of Article 370 from Jammu and Kashmir. Earlier, assembly elections were held in Jammu and Kashmir in December 2014. In which Mehbooba Mufti’s party PDP contested the election in alliance with BJP. PDP emerged as the single largest party in the election with 28 seats, while BJP became the second largest party with 25 seats. In June 2018, BJP withdrew support to PDP and Mehbooba Mufti’s government fell. In November 2018, the Center imposed President’s rule in Jammu and Kashmir.

The central government had removed Article 370 from Kashmir on 5 August 2019. Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh became separate union territories. Amit Shah said that there will be no assembly in Ladakh, while in Jammu and Kashmir, the assembly seats will increase after the delimitation.

What is the new delimitation proposal for Jammu and Kashmir?
In its report, the Delimitation Commission has proposed to increase a total of 7 assembly seats, including 6 in Jammu and 1 assembly seat in Kashmir. According to these proposals, the assembly seats in Jammu and Kashmir will now increase from 83 to 90, while the Lok Sabha seats will remain five.

A major change has also been made in the composition of the existing assembly seats in the state. According to the proposals, there is a proposal to increase the assembly seats of Jammu from 37 to 43 and that of Kashmir from 46 to 47.
