The state governments of Assam and Meghalaya are going to resolve the 50-year-old border dispute. CM of both the states Himanta Biswa Sarma and KK Sangma are going to sign an agreement in the capital Delhi on Tuesday. According to the Ministry of Home Affairs, the agreement will be signed by the Chief Ministers of Assam and Meghalaya in the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah at around 3.30 pm.

The Chief Ministers of Assam and Meghalaya had sent a draft to the Home Ministry for examination and consideration. The governments of Assam and Meghalaya have agreed to resolve border disputes in 6 out of 12 along a border of 884 km. According to the recommendations sent for 36.79 sq km of land, Assam will keep 18.51 sq km with itself and the remaining 18.28 sq km will be given to Meghalaya.

This final agreement between the two states is very important because the dispute has been going on for a very long time. It started in 1972 when Meghalaya was carved out of Assam. Disputes arose during the demarcation of the agreement to form a new state.

6 areas, whose ownership was agreed upon by both the states
The six areas associated with the Assam-Meghalaya border dispute are Tarabari, Gijang, Hahim, Boklapara, Khanapara-Pilangkata and Ratchera. Which form part of West Khasi Hills, Ri-Bhoi and East Jaintia Hills districts in Meghalaya and Cachar, Kamrup (Metro) and Kamrup districts from Assam side. Of the 36 disputed villages along the inter-state border, 30, with a total geographical area of ​​18.29 sq km, will remain in Meghalaya while 18.51 sq km will go to Assam.
