GUWAHATI: Assam started administering the booster dose on all health care workers (HCWs), frontline workers (FLWs) and 60-plus citizens with comorbidities from Monday.
State health minister Keshab Mahanta launched the statewide drive from Jorhat Medical College Hospital (JMCH) in upper Assam. Mahanta said all government employees will get booster dose phase-wise, as they will be considered frontline workers in Assam.
“Those selected categories of beneficiaries who have completed nine months from taking the second dose are now eligible for the booster dose. In Assam, we have to incorporate various sections of employees in the frontline workers category. District administration employees engaged in election duty and those officials who played a proactive role in offices, would also get priority as frontline workers,” said Mahanta. He added that ultimately, all government officials will get the booster dose as frontline workers.
Several renowned doctors and senior citizens were jabbed in Gauhati Medical College Hospital (GMCH) here on the first day of the drive. Padma Shri surgeon Dr Illias Ali, internationally acclaimed surgeon Dr Subhas Khanna and director of health services, Assam, Dr Rathindra Bhuyan, were among the noted personalities to get inoculated with the booster dose in Guwahati on Day 1.
A total of 268 people were given the booster dose in GMCH. “Booster dose is going to be administered in a hassle-free manner in GMCH. The eligible beneficiaries just need to walk in,” said GMCH superintendent Dr Abhijit Sarma.
Dr Ilias Ali was sure that antibodies against the virus will certainly get enhanced with the booster dose and thus, the immunity of the individuals. “We were eagerly waiting for the booster dose as the third wave of the pandemic was imminent,” Ali told TOI.
State vaccination office informed that 2.6 lakh people in Assam became eligible to get the booster dose as of Monday. Also known as precaution dose, a total of 7,921 beneficiaries, including 4,577 HCWs, 1,439 FLWs and 1,905 above 60 citizens were vaccinated with third dose on Monday.
“Today is just the beginning and booster doses were administered mainly in medical college hospitals and selected government hospitals in the districts on the first day. The campaign will be expanded from tomorrow,” said state nodal officer of Covid-19 vaccination, Munindra Nath Ngatey.
