Due to rain, the action on Day 3 of first Test between England and Australia had to be called off with England 28/2 in their second innings, holding a 35-run lead

The rain hit Day 3 of Ashes 2023 saw England open up a 35-run lead over Australia but Ben Stokes’ side lost both their openers early on Sunday. After a brilliant show with the ball earlier in the first session, the English side were able to restrict Australia to 386 runs.

Having declared their first innings at 393/8, the hosts managed to open up a slender 7-run lead however, once they set out to bat, the overcast conditions played their part and Australian bowlers took control of the game.

Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett both failed to leave a mark and were dismissed in quick succession before the heavens opened up much to the dismay of the Australian bowlers who would have fancied more wickets.

Play had been halted briefly on Sunday but the second rain enforced delay was so long that the umpires were left with no choice but to call the action off on Day 3.
