iOS 17.3.1 update is expected to bring stability and bug fixes.

Apple could release an iOS 17.3.1 update before the major iOS 17.4 update in March, loaded with bug fixes and security updates.

Apple is said to be working on preparing the iOS 17.3.1 update for all supported iPhones, as reported by MacRumors. This update isn’t expected to carry a big feature drop or even introduce smaller quality-of-life features; instead, it is expected to be a minor update that addresses software bugs and perhaps some security vulnerabilities, according to the publication.

It is worth noting that over the last two years, Apple has repeatedly released versions like iOS 16.3.1 in February 2023 and iOS 15.3.1 in February 2022. This suggests that the same may happen this year as well. However, the publication has not mentioned when we can expect Apple to release the purported update.

Now that we know that users won’t receive major features with the iOS 17.3.1 update, IT it is worth mentioning that Apple is confirmed to be working on the iOS 17.4 update, expected to be rolled out around March this year.

With it, Apple is expected to bring a major overhaul to iOS, including EU-specific changes like support for third-party app stores and hence support for sideloading, the ability to choose a default browser, general features for everyone like new emojis, and even podcast transcripts.

Apple is bringing these regulatory changes to comply with the EU’s DMA requirements. In iOS 17.4, iPhone users in EU countries will soon have the option to access alternative app stores, rather than relying solely on the App Store for downloading apps and games. This gives users the option to download apps from anywhere they wish to do so.
