New Delhi: PM Modi in his visit to Andhra Pradesh’s Bhimavaram besides unveiling “great” freedom fighter Alluri Sitharama Raju’s statue, has met the family of another freedom fighter Pasala Krishna Murthy. PM Modi took the blessings of Krishna Murthy’s 90-year-old daughter, Pasala Krishna Bharathi. Modi also met her sister and neice.
Krishna Murthy was from Vipparru village in Tadepalligudem taluk in then Madras Presidency (now Andhra Pradesh). Murthy was born on January 26, 1900.

Who is Pasala Krishna Murthy?
For Krishna Murthy, it all started when Gandhi ji visited Vijayawada in March 1921, he along with his wife Anjalakshmi joined the Congress. After eight years in 1929, when Gandhiji again visited Chagallu village in West Godavari district, the Krishna Murthy couple, who had daughter Bharathi, donated gold for the Khaddar fund. In October 1930, after he took part in Salt Satyagraha movement, the British sentenced him for one-year imprisonment.
In a heroic act, Krishna Murthy during the Civil Disobedience Movement picketed a foreign textile shop in Tadepalligudem market and hoisted the national flag in the Bhimavaram sub-collector’s office in June 1932. As a result, he was sentenced to another year of imprisonment and a fine of Rs 400. However, his jail term was extended by 12 weeks for failing to pay the penalty.
He served as President of the Tadepalligudem Taluka Independent Fighters Association, post-independence. He died in September 1978.
