In 2002, the Vajpayee government declared a national project
In 1905, the then Maharaja of Kashmir announced the laying of a railway line connecting Srinagar to Jammu via the Mughal Road. After initial work the project was delayed and later abandoned. Then the work was started in March 1995 at a cost of Rs 2500 crores, but there was not much progress in the next 7 years. In 2002, the Vajpayee government declared it a national project, then its cost became Rs 6000 crore.

The laying of the line was fraught with geographical problems. Overcoming all these, now this network has reached towards being ready. However, today the cost of this project has reached Rs 27,949 crore. It is running with a delay of 20 years.

It has mountains, slopes and earthquake sensitive areas from Jammu to Baramulla. For this reason, 27 major bridges and 10 minor bridges have to be built in it. You are ready to become the chief 21. Chenab Bridge is also in this section.

To reach construction sites in remote areas, 203 km of new roads had to be built. An official said work on 162.6 km out of 163.88 km (including tunnels) under the Katra-Banihal section has been completed. And out of 117.7 km, 31.3 km track is ready. India’s longest escape tunnel, which is 12.89 km long on the Banihal-Katra railway line, has been completed in December.
