For the unversed, before the release of Bade Miyan and Chote Miyan, Amitabh Bachchan was going through a rough patch in Bollywood. He gave back to back flop films at box office such as Mrityudata and Major Saab. Apart from acting, he also ventured into the production business, which also faced failures. During this time, being disappointed, he also distanced himself from films for some time. When Amitabh Bachchan made a return after being away from the screen for 5 years, the audience rejected his comeback film Mrityudaata.

According to media reports, it is believed that the director David Dhawan advised Big B to work with Govinda in a movie. The duo worked in Bade Miyan Chote Miyan, which was a blockbuster success at the box office. It was directed by David Dhawan.

The movie became the highest grossing movie of 1998. It starred Govinda and Amitabh Bachchan in lead roles, whereas Ramya Krishnan and Raveena Tandon essayed the role of lead actresses in the movie. The film is considered to be one of the best comedy films of Bollywood. The chemistry between the lead actors was highly appreciated by the critics and the audience.
