Coimbatore: The rural police have arrested seven people, who posed as income tax sleuths, to rob a businessman of 15 lakh. The arrested people were identified as N Praveenkumar, 36, of Ayyavu Street at Sanganur, R Manikandan, 37, of Sivanandapuram and S Mohan Kumar, 30, of Rajiv Gandhi Road at Ganapathy, R Sathish, 36, of Kinathukadavu, A Ramasamy, 47, of Perur Chettipalayam, R Anand, 47, of Bagavathipalayam and D Thiyagarajan, 42, of Masthigoundanpathi near Othakkalmandapam.
A five-member gang had arrived in the house of quarry owner K Panchalingam, 55, at Kinathukadavu, on January 15, in a multi-purpose vehicle. They snatched Panchalingam’s mobile phone and flashed fake identity cards. They took away 15 lakh, a mobile phone and digital video recorder (DVR) of the CCTV surveillance system from the house.
Panchalingam, who suspected foul play, alerted the Kinathukadavu police.
Police formed three special teams to nab the gang. “We traced the registration numbers of the vehicle and arrested the seven-member gang on Thursday. We recovered 3 lakh and a car from them. We are on the lookout for Maheswaran, Faizal and Mathew in connection with the case,” a police officer said.
