The summit was hosted by the current BIMSTEC President Sri Lanka.

For us, regional security has become of paramount importance. Sri Lanka’s President Rajapaksa led the BIMSTEC better than the challenges of the last two years. In today’s challenging environment, our region has not remained untouched. We are still facing the bad effect of Corona. This conference has become special on the 25th year of the establishment of BIMSTEC.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi was speaking these things at the 5th BIMSTEC summit on Wednesday. He virtually became a part of this conference.

PM Modi said these things

  • Recent events in Europe have raised questions about the sustainability of the international order. Therefore regional cooperation has become our priority. Today we are adopting the BIMSTEC Charter for the development of the Institute’s infrastructure for this.
  • India will give 1 million US dollars to the (BIMSTEC) Secretariat to increase its operational budget. It is necessary to strengthen the capacity of the (BIMSTEC) Secretariat. A roadmap should be prepared for this.
  • Work is on to extend Nalanda International University’s BIMSTEC scholarships. We are also entering into a treaty of mutual legal assistance for crime control.
  • The time has come to make the Bay of Bengal a means of connectivity and security. I call upon all BIMSTEC countries to work with renewed vigor to regain the goals achieved together in 1997.
