5-layer Runway Resurfacing Done | Ahmedabad News – Times of India

AHMEDABAD: As part of the ongoing runway resurfacing at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International (SVPI) airport in Ahmedabad, five-layer resurfacing of the runway has been completed.
The work is expected to continue till May 31, and the runway will thus be closed for flight movements from 9am to 6pm except on public holidays and Sundays.
The airport operator on Thursday issued a statement saying, “SVPI airport has completed the proposed five layers of dense bituminous macadam (DBM) on the runway main pavement and shoulders. DBM is a binder course used for surfaces where heavy loads such as trucks and aircraft are envisaged. It is a mixture of specific materials with precise measurements batched to the highest quality standards.”
More than 1.08 lakh MT of asphalt has already been laid, which in itself a record for an operational runway in the country. With this, the runway now has a bi-directional slope throughout the entire length of 3,505m.
“The existing taxiway connecting the domestic apron has also been resurfaced with a fresh layer of DBM. This has resulted in better ride quality and improved safety of aircraft operations. Stormwater drain construction is also on in full swing and on target for completion,” the airport operator said.
