First there was news of train derailment, then information about collision was received.
An hour after the accident, the news of a train derailment came in Balasore at around 8 pm. After this, it was known that the second train was derailed. At around 10 pm, it became clear that two passenger trains and a goods train had collided. Initially, there was information about 30 people killed, but late in the night this figure crossed 200.

Railway officials said that a goods train was standing on the outer line of Bahanga Bazar station. The Coromandel Express going from Howrah to Chennai derailed here and collided with a goods train. The engine of the express overturned the goods train and the bogies fell onto the third track.   • 1000 passengers who were safe in the accident were sent to Howrah by Visvesvaraya-Howrah Express.
  • A special train coming from Balasore sent 200 passengers with food and relief material.
  • Three teams of NDRF and 20 teams of Fire Service and Rescue are at the spot. Of these, there are 1200 rescuers.
  • After the accident, 115 ambulances, 50 buses and 45 mobile health units were deployed at the spot.
  • NDRF and Airforce sent helicopters for rescue. Rescue teams also reached from Bhubaneswar, Kolkata.
  • Medical and Engineering Corps from the Army’s Eastern Command were deployed for ambulances and medical aid.
  • More than 2000 people were present outside Balasore Medical College throughout the night, many donated blood.
  • Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya asked to make arrangements like bed, ICU in Bhubaneswar AIIMS.
  • Due to track closure, 48 trains have been cancelled, 39 diverted and 10 short terminated.
  • The inauguration program of the Goa-Mumbai Vande Bharat Express scheduled for Saturday was cancelled.
  • Odisha Chief Secretary said at 8 pm on Saturday night – the death toll so far is 288.

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav reached Balasore in the morning and ordered an inquiry into the accident. He announced Rs 10 lakh to the family of the dead, Rs 2 lakh to the seriously injured and Rs 50,000 to those who sustained injuries. Expressing grief over the accident, Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi have appealed to the party workers to help the people.

Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik visited Balasore Hospital. He has declared one day state mourning in the state. West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee also reached Balasore. He announced compensation from the state for the affected. Here, the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu has spoken to the Chief Minister of Odisha. Three state ministers have reached Odisha.

Train No. 12864 Bengaluru – Howrah Superfast Express departed from Yesvantpur station in Bengaluru at 7:30 am on June 1. It was to reach Howrah on June 2 at around 8 pm. It reached Bhadrak at 06:30, with a delay of 3.30 hours from its scheduled time. The next station was Balasore, where the train was scheduled to reach at 7:52, with a delay of 4 hours.

Whereas, train number 12841 Shalimar-Chennai Central Coromandel Express left Howrah at 3:20 pm on June 2 itself. It reaches Chennai Central at 4:50 pm on 3 June. It reached Balasore on time at 6:37 PM. The next station was Bhadrak where the train was supposed to reach at 7:40 am, but at around 7 am both the trains passed face to face near Bahanaga Bazar station, when the accident happened.

14 years, same time of Friday, when Coromandel Express derailed in Odisha itself
Coromandel Express was the victim of a similar accident 14 years ago i.e. on 13 February 2009. It is a matter of coincidence that that accident also happened around 7:30 in the evening. The train was going towards Jajpur railway station. During this, it went on the wrong track and its 8 bogies were overturned. 16 passengers were killed and more than 40 were injured in the accident.
