3 dead, 99 missing in US Florida building collapse

At least three people were killed and 12 others were injured after a partial collapse of a 12-story residential building in Miami-Dade County in the southeastern US state of Florida early Thursday, local media reported. People went missing.

At least 12 people were injured in the incident, two of whom are in critical condition, Xinhua news agency reported.

It is not clear how many residents were in the building at the time of the incident. Surfside officials said they could not confirm the number of people missing, but the situation looked critical.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue received a call about a partial collapse of the Champlain Towers South condominium in the seaside town of Surfside, about 6 miles north of Miami Beach, at approximately 1:30 a.m. local time.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Assistant Chief Rad Jadallah said at least 35 people trapped in the building and two others had been rescued from under the rubble so far.

Video footage from the scene showed a large part of the building collapsed into a pile of rubble and a young boy was pulled alive from the rubble.

Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniela Levin Cava said, “It’s unimaginable. It’s a terrifying, terrifying nightmare we have here on the surfside.”

According to Jadallah, there are 136 units in the Oceanfront condominium, built in 1981, and about 55 of them collapsed in the Northeast Corridor.
