29 died due to drinking spurious liquor in Gujarat: instead of alcohol, people were given methanol yellow; 14 arrested including main accused

In Gujarat’s Botad district, 29 people have died so far, while 30 people are seriously ill after consuming spurious liquor. In this case 14 people including the main accused have been arrested. The SIT has started the investigation of the case.

Initial investigation revealed that on Monday, people from 9 villages had come to drink alcohol at a liquor furnace in Rojid village of Barwala. Instead of alcohol, methanol chemical was used. This methanol was brought from Ahmedabad.

Funeral on the ground, not even crematorium
Instead of the cremation ground, those who died of drinking spurious liquor were cremated on the ground below. Most of the bodies of 9 people have been cremated in Rosind village. Apart from Rosind, there are weeds in Race, Quartet, Dhandhuka, Naboi, Ranpari, Polarpur and Chauraga due to poisonous liquor.

Minister said – will take action against police officers
Minister in-charge of the district Vinu Marodia said that this incident is sad and shameful. We will investigate how and who is selling liquor in the state despite prohibition? Action will also be taken against the guilty police officers.

Opposition’s question- How did you get the poisonous liquor?
Congress leader Shakti Singh Gohil has questioned the government and asked how poisonous liquor was found in the prohibition Gujarat? He said- The government has given the responsibility of investigation to the DSP. The role of the police itself is questionable. So how can the test be correct?

Liquor prohibition is in force in Gujarat for 62 years
Liquor ban was implemented in Gujarat from 1960 itself. In 2017, the Gujarat government had made the law related to prohibition more stringent. Under this, if someone sells liquor illegally, then he can be punished with imprisonment of 10 years and fine up to Rs 5 lakh.
