In India, about 5 lakh people die every year due to wrong surgery. This has been revealed in a Harvard University study. According to the National Practitioner Data Bank (NPDB), 67% of incorrect surgeries were performed by a doctor over the age of 40, compared to only 25% among those under 40. The reason for this is overconfidence, because experienced doctors feel that they cannot make mistakes, which makes them careless.

According to the report, 12% of patients who are treated by doctors aged 60 and above die on an average within 30 days of admission. As the doctor gets older, the mortality rate of his patients also increases. Such patients are 10.8% among doctors under 40, 11.1% among those between 40 and 49 years and 11.3% among those 50 to 59 years.

The American Journal of Medicine says that doctors who have had 20 years of practice have a higher death rate for serious patients than new doctors (less than 5 years of experience). There is also a reason that experienced doctors do not keep themselves very updated with new technologies.

Problem- Old age doctors are not updated with new technology and research

  • While being a resident, doctors see many patients, as soon as they become physicians, they start seeing fewer patients. This reduces clinical knowledge.
  • Removing yourself from new guidelines, research, medical education reduces the qualifications of aging doctors.
  • According to a 2020 study, 14.9% of medical staff are confused about right and left, which is also a major reason for having wrong surgeries.

Solution- Choose only such a doctor, where there are lines of patients

  • A Harvard Medical School study says that the best way to choose a good doctor is to go where there is a long line of patients.
  • Older doctors who see more and more patients perform much better.
  • According to research, experienced doctors who have fewer patients, they keep their patients admitted in the hospital for half a day more.

Caution- If small mistakes are stopped, then deaths will be reduced by 50%.

  • There are 134 million cases of carelessness in the world every year, in which 26 lakh deaths occur.
  • If even small mistakes in the operation are prevented, then 50% of deaths can be reduced annually.
  • There are more cases of wrong test report and wrong medicine.
