New Delhi: Congress leader Shashi Tharoor hinted that the Lok Sabha elections next year might be his final contest from Thiruvananthapuram as he intended to provide opportunities to the younger generation. Speaking to the media on the sidelines of a Congress event on Thursday, the senior leader said there was no finality on the matter yet.
“The party candidacies have not been announced yet. I believe that at some point, a time comes to make room for younger people,” Tharoor said.

However, he acknowledged the fact that politics can be unpredictable and keeping the door open for future possibilities, he said, “In politics, there is another slogan which is ‘never say never’.”
Clarifying his remarks in a recent TV show where he had said the upcoming elections may mark his final contest from the constituency, Tharoor said, “I didn’t say never, I said I think it will be my last election.”
Shashi Tharoor said in any case if he is going to contest the general elections from Thiruvananthapuram next year, he would fight it as though it were his last election, in full spirits, delivering his best efforts for the people.
“In any case, If I’m going to contest, I’ll do so in the spirit of my last election,” Tharoor said.
Asked about his candidacy, Tharoor said the Congress high command is yet to make any official announcement and that such decisions depend entirely on the party.
“When the party announces who the candidates are, we will all get to work,” the senior leader said.
It is to be noted that Tharoor registered a resounding victory in the 2009 Lok Sabha election, securing the Thiruvananthapuram constituency in Kerala that marked his debut in Parliament. He won from the seat in the next two elections in 2014 and 2019.
