Victims taken ill after drinking spurious liquor were brought to a hospital in Tamil Nadu’s Villupuram district on Monday.

14 people died in two incidents of spurious liquor in Tamil Nadu. Nine people have died in Viluppuram and five in Chengalpattu. 33 people are currently admitted in hospitals. The CM has ordered suspension of Villupuram SP and transfer of Chengalpattu SP in this matter. On Saturday evening, some people had consumed illicit liquor in a fishing village at Ekiyarkuppam in Viluppuram. After this his health deteriorated. Five of these people died on Sunday after being admitted to the hospital. Four others succumbed to their injuries on Monday.

Earlier on Friday, five people died after consuming illicit spurious liquor at Maduranthagam in Chengalpattu district.

Inspector General of Police N Kannan said two incidents of spurious liquor were reported in both the districts. In Villupuram district, people were admitted to the hospital after complaining of vomiting, burning sensation in the eyes and dizziness. He later died. An accused Amaran has been arrested in connection with the incident and spurious liquor has been seized.

He said that on information the police team reached the village and admitted the victims to the hospital. Four died in this because they did not get timely treatment. The condition of 33 people admitted to the hospital is fine.

Kannan further informed that in Chengalpattu district, five people were hospitalised. All of them died during treatment. The post mortem has been done. The accused Ammavasai has been arrested in connection with the incident in Chengalpattu district.

Some accused in both the incidents are absconding and special teams have been formed to nab the accused. Ethanol-methanol and other chemical mixtures were allegedly used in the liquor consumed by the victims. It is used in the factory.

Three inspectors and four sub-inspectors have been suspended from both the districts for not performing duty in the case of spurious liquor.

Announcement of compensation of 10-10 lakh rupees
CM reached MK Stalin Hospital on Monday and met the patients admitted there. Stalin says that preliminary investigation has revealed that methanol was used to make spurious liquor. He announced a compensation of Rs 10 lakh each to the families of those who died and Rs 50,000 to those hospitalized.

The CM also directed the concerned authorities to provide proper treatment to the people admitted to the hospital in the incident. Said the government is strictly banning illegal liquor and drugs.
