GURUGRAM: Nine people were killed in two separate accidents in Gurugram on Wednesday night. A 36-year-old driver racing down Golf Course Road in a Skoda Rapid crashed head-on into two motorcycles, killing all four who were going home on the two-wheelers, while five employees of a logistics company who were out for dinner died as their car crashed into a truck parked along the Delhi-Jaipur highway.
The four motorcycle-borne victims were employees of a takeaway joint in DLF-1’s Qutub Plaza and shared an accommodation in Chakkarpur.
Fatal late-night travel for eatery staff
The driver has been identified as Harsh Singh, a resident of Sector 43 who works as a sales executive with a web development and consultancy firm. He has been arrested.
Police said the four men who died – Govind Singh (28) from Madhya Pradesh’s Damoh, Jitender Mandal (35) and his nephew Rajnish (22) from Bihar’s Sitamarhi and Gopal Singh (26) from Nainital in Uttarakhand – were thrown several metres due to the impact of the collision. While one of them died on the spot, the others succumbed to their injuries later.
Manoj Singh (42), the owner of Chacha’s Takeaway and the victims’ employer, said, “We closed for the day around midnight. After cleaning up, all of us left around 12.30am. Jitender and Rajnish left on one bike while Gopal and Govind were on another bike.” He added that he left for home in his car a few minutes after them.
DCP (east) Virender Kumar said Harsh was “highly drunk” when he was driving the Skoda. “He has been arrested and sent to jail. Further investigation is in progress,” said the DCP.
Meanwhile, tragedy struck the logistics company after five of its employees decided to head out to celebrate the birthday of one of the victims, Chandra Mohan. The accident happened near Highway King Hotel in Binola. Police said all of them sustained fatal head injuries and died on the spot. Cops had to use a gas cutter to retrieve the bodies from the mangled Celerio. The faces of all the deceased were damaged beyond recognition.
Sandeep, one of the victims, was supposed to get married on March 21, while the engagement ceremony of Ashish Singh, the one at the wheel, was slated for Thursday. He was scheduled to leave for his house in Rajasthan’s Bhiwadi after the birthday celebrations. All of them were the sole breadwinners of their families.
“The five were close friends,” said Kamdev Kumar, the accounts head of Som Logistic Solution Pvt Ltd. Chandra Mohan from Hisar was the manager of the company’s Ghaziabad branch, while Ashish was a senior member of the sales team. Sandeep from Kaithal, on the other hand was logistics in-charge. The other victims were identified as Bharat Bhushan from Delhi who headed the administrative section of Manesar branch, and Praveen Sharma, the branch manager in Manesar.
DCP (traffic) RS Tomar said there are no CCTV cameras near the accident spot. “All the five occupants of the car died in the accident and the truck driver fled the spot. It is not clear what exactly happened at the time of the accident. We have formed a special probe team.”
