Wrestlers will return to the ring or on strike, it will be decided today: charge sheet may be presented against Brijbhushan, this will decide further movement

Wrestlers started protesting against Brij Bhushan on 18 January. This performance has been going on for 5 months.

It can be decided today whether the top wrestlers who opened a front against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, former president of the Wrestling Federation of India, will return to the wrestling ring or go on strike. In fact, the Sports Minister had assured the wrestlers that the Delhi Police would present the charge sheet in the court by June 15 after completing the investigation in the sexual harassment case against Brij Bhushan.

Police Commissioner Sanjay Arora has also held a meeting with the SIT regarding the investigation report. In this case, the police have recorded the statements of 209 people. Have taken evidence from 4 wrestlers. CCTV footage, photographs from various SAI centers and competition venues and statements of the concerned neighbors have been recorded.

Know… What can the parties related to the case do today…

  • Police: Can present the charge sheet in the court at 11 am. It will discuss the investigation report, evidence and under which sections the case will be run. The POCSO Act against Brij Bhushan may be withdrawn.
  • home Ministry: On May 28, a decision can be taken regarding the withdrawal of the case registered against the wrestlers and their supporters.
  • Sports Ministry: An announcement can be made to make a woman its president by forming an internal complaint committee of the Wrestling Federation of India. A complaint of discrimination against a minor wrestler can be sent before this committee. After the announcement of the Sports Minister, the election schedule has been released. Two coaches have been included in the adhoc committee.
  • Wrestler: According to the struggle committee of wrestlers, if the investigation report is not found suitable, they will announce to take forward the movement at 2:00 pm. The place and date can be announced in the evening. If you are satisfied with the investigation report, you can appeal to the government regarding the trial of the Asian Games. Actually, there is a possibility of conducting the trial by the adhoc committee from 20 to 25 June. The wrestlers want to include their names along with the winners of the trials and make them compete with the winners of the trials in the first week of August.

4 out of 6 women wrestlers provided evidence, one changed statement

Out of the 6 women wrestlers who have made allegations against Brij Bhushan, 4 have provided audio and visual evidence to the Delhi Police. A Delhi Police officer claimed that both the complainants did not provide sufficient evidence to prove their allegations against Brij Bhushan. A wrestler has backtracked from his statement.

However, the Delhi Police has not confirmed this statement. Two women wrestlers, an international referee and a state level coach have given testimony to the police in support of the wrestlers.

Wrestlers met Anurag Thakur on June 7
Wrestlers Bajrang Punia and Sakshi Malik had a six-hour meeting with Sports Minister Anurag Thakur in Delhi on June 7. After the meeting, wrestler Sakshi Malik had said that the government has sought time till June 15 to complete the probe. Till then they have been appealed not to hold any protest. Even on the question of Brij Bhushan’s arrest, the Sports Minister had said that the investigation would be completed and action would be taken on its basis and the charge sheet would be presented by the police in the matter by June 15.

  • Investigate the allegations and file the charge sheet by June 15.
  • WFI elections to be held by June 30.
  • In WFI, there was talk of forming an internal complaint committee under the leadership of a woman president.
  • Till the WFI elections, it was agreed to propose the names of 2 coaches on the adhoc committee of IOA and take opinion from the players in the election of the federation.
  • The outgoing President Brij Bhushan Singh and his relatives should not come after being elected, this was the demand of the wrestlers.
  • Women players should get security as per their requirement. There was a demand to withdraw the players, akhadas or coaches against whom there are cases.

What has happened so far in the wrestlers’ dharna?

  • Vinesh Phogat, Sakshi Malik along with Bajrang Punia started a dharna at Jantar Mantar on 18th January. Alleged that the then WFI President Brij Bhushan Singh sexually assaulted women wrestlers.
  • After the controversy escalated on January 21, Union Sports Minister Anurag Thakur met the wrestlers and formed a committee, but the report of the committee has not been made public till date.
  • On April 23, the wrestlers again sat on a dharna at Jantar Mantar. He said that the strike will continue till the arrest of Brij Bhushan.
  • On April 28, on the orders of the Supreme Court, in the hearing of the petition of the wrestlers, the Delhi Police registered 2 FIRs against Brij Bhushan for molestation and under the POCSO Act.
  • On the night of 3 May, there was a clash between wrestlers and policemen at Jantar Mantar. Dushyant, brother of wrestlers Rakesh Yadav and Vinesh Phogat, and 5 policemen were injured in the clash.
  • On May 7, a mahapanchayat of Khaps of Haryana, UP, Rajasthan and Punjab took place at Jantar Mantar. In this, a 15-day ultimatum was given to the Central Government for the arrest of Brij Bhushan.
  • Mahapanchayat was again held on 21st May and it was decided to hold candle march at India Gate and Mahila Mahapanchayat on 28th May at the new Parliament House.
  • On May 26, the wrestlers held a press conference and told that on May 28, they would march on foot from the picket site to the new Parliament House.
  • On May 28, when the wrestlers tried to go for the mahapanchayat in front of the new parliament building, the police took them into custody.
  • On May 29, the wrestlers stayed at home all day and decided to go on a fast unto death at the India Gate.
  • On May 30, the wrestlers went to Haridwar Har Ki Pauri to exchange their medals. Where on the persuasion of farmer leader Naresh Tikait, he postponed the decision by giving an ultimatum of 5 days to the government.
  • On May 31, news agency ANI quoted sources as claiming that the Delhi Police did not have evidence to arrest Brij Bhushan. On this, the Delhi Police denied it by tweeting and said – investigation is on. Later Delhi Police deleted its tweet.
  • A mahapanchayat was held in Kurukshetra on 2nd June. In this, an ultimatum was given to arrest Brij Bhushan by 9th June.
  • On June 3, the Delhi Police has received 4 witnesses in this case, who have confirmed the allegations against Brij Bhushan. These include one Olympian, Commonwealth Gold Medalist, International Referee and State Level Coach.
  • On June 4, it was learned that the wrestlers had a meeting with Home Minister Amit Shah.
  • On June 5, Vinesh, Sakshi and Bajrang joined the duty in the Railways. Sakshi, however, said that her agitation would continue.
  • On knowing about the meeting with Amit Shah on 6th June, the farmers and khaps postponed their protest at Jantar Mantar on 9th June.
  • On June 7, the wrestlers had come to meet Sports Minister Anurag Thakur. This meeting lasted for 6 hours.
