Days after Bhojpuri singer-actor Pawan Singh decided not to contest the upcoming Lok Sabha elections from the Bharatiya Janata Party’s Asansol ticket, the leader on Wednesday took to microblogging site X to say that he will fight to “fulfill the promise he made to the society, people and his mother”.

“I will contest elections to fulfill the promise made to my society, people and mother. Your blessings and cooperation are expected. Jai Mata Di,” Singh wrote in his X post.

The singer-actor on March 3, citing personal reasons, had said that he would not be able to contest the general elections.

The saffron camp had fielded him from West Bengal’s Asansol constituency.

In an X post, the Bhojpuri superstar had written, “I express my heartfelt gratitude to the top leadership of the Bharatiya Janata Party. The party trusted me and declared me as the candidate from Asansol, but due to some reason, I will not be able to contest the elections from Asansol.”

His decision to opt out from contesting the polls had come in the backdrop of severe criticism of his candidature by the saffron camp’s political opponents, including Bengal’s ruling Trinamool Congress, who accused his work and songs of objectifying women.

BJP’s IT cell head Amit Malviya then responded to the opposition by launching a sharp attack asking the TMC to “stop pontificating” and respect those “who work for a living”.

Sources in the BJP had told News18 that Singh has informed the party leadership that he is unavailable to contest the polls due to family reasons.

The saffron party on March 3 released its first list of 195 candidates for the upcoming general elections.

While the Prime Minister will be contesting from Varanasi for the third time, party heavyweights like Amit Shah and Rajnath Singh have been fielded from Gandhinagar and Lucknow seats respectively.

The party’s move to field the Bhojpuri actor and singer from the Asansol seat was a surprise nomination. The constituency lies in the coal mine belt of West Burdwan district in Bengal.
