The rope products originating from Kerala’s Alappuzha are renowned worldwide, particularly those crafted in Cherthala and Ambalapuzha taluks within the district, known as Alappuzha coir. The distinction of the rope produced in Ambalapuzha and Cherthala taluks grew notably following its recognition by the World Trade Organization (WTO) as a ‘territorial indicator,’ thus earning the moniker Alappuzha rope.
Rope-making traditions in this region date back to 1859. Alappuzha coir is crafted from the finest coconut husks sourced from coastal areas. Exported to over 80 countries, Alappuzha rope enjoys a global reputation for its quality and craftsmanship.
The easy access to raw materials, coupled with the presence of backwaters and canals suitable for wetting green husks, as well as efficient transportation networks, are the primary factors driving the growth of the coir industry in this region. Trade in coir products dates back to ancient times, with Arabs being among the early traders.
The production of mats and mattings was initiated in 1859 by Mr. James Durragh, an American who established the firm M/s Durragh Smail Ltd. in Alappuzha, with offices in London and New York. The Coir Board was established by the Central Government under the Coir Industry Act, of 1955, and a Coir Research Institute operates in Kalavoor. The National Coir Training and Designing Centre was also set up in Alappuzha in 1965.
Alappuzha, often dubbed the Venice of the East, has witnessed significant development, with its interior contributing to its overall progress. The rope is exported from more than a thousand small producers registered with the Coir Board. The city has been popular since ancient times as a significant trading and commercial hub. Arabs engaged in trade in coir products and pepper from early periods. Coir yarn and fibre stand out as the primary commodities exported from this district. Moreover, Alappuzha serves as a vital exporting centre for coconut oil, areca nut, cardamom, sugar and pepper.
