Where to draw the line with friends, girls need to know, JNU’s ‘Ways’ to Prevent Sexual Harassment

Jawaharlal Nehru University’s (JNU) ‘misogynistic’ notification should be withdrawn. Rekha Sharma, chairperson of the National Commission for Women, made such a demand. The notice said that girls need to know how to draw a ‘definite’ line in relationships with male friends to prevent sexual harassment.

On Tuesday, the chairperson of the National Commission for Women said on Twitter, ‘Why are only girls always taught? This time it is time to teach the perpetrators, not the perpetrators. The misogynistic guidelines of Jawaharlal Nehru University should be withdrawn. The internal committee (Jawaharlal Nehru University’s internal grievance committee or ICC) should have a view on behalf of the victims.

Recently, a notification was issued on behalf of JNU’s internal grievance committee. It was informed that a counseling session on sexual harassment has been organized on January 17 of the new year. The notification claims that this will be done every month from now on and will inform the students against sexual harassment. The statement said, “The ICC has encountered a number of incidents where sexual harassment has been reported between close friends. The fine line between friendly chat and sexual harassment is usually crossed by boys (sometimes intentionally, sometimes inadvertently). To prevent such harassment, girls need to know how to draw a line between them and their male friends.

A heated debate ensued over that part of the notification. Some of the students and teachers were angry that the responsibility of sexual harassment was being imposed on the girls. In the midst of that debate, Poonam Kumari, the presiding officer of JNU’s internal grievances committee, said, “Everyone has their own point of view. How they look at things is different for everyone. They can look at the counseling session in a positive light and feel that such a program has been taken.
