When I get hurt, I cover it with poetry: The stage buzzed with the words of Gulzar, Javed and Shabana on the second day of Lit Fest

After the first boring and boring day, the second day is the busiest and takes a deep dive into the river of literature. 11 in the morning. Front lawn of Jaipur Lit Fest. Javed Akhtar, Shabana Azmi are on stage and Rakshanda Jalil talks to them. When it comes to romantic style, Shabana taunts – people meet me and say that the one who writes such romantic songs is your life partner. Your life has become successful. I said – there is not even an iota of anything called romantic in this man.

On this tone, Javed got excited in a literary tone. Answered- Brother, those who work on the swing in the circus, do they hang upside down at home all day long? After loud laughter, the talk proceeded. Actually this session was on the poetry of Jannisar Akhtar and Kaifi Azmi. Jannisar Sahab means father-in-law of Shabana and Kaifi Sahab means father-in-law of Javed Akhtar. Overall, there was a session on Shayari’s father-in-law. Gulzar was sitting down below as a listener.

Giving some examples, Shabana said – The difference that exists between Javed and Gulzar Sahib was the same between Jannisar Akhtar and Kaifi Azmi. Shabana said – When you read Jannisar Akhtar Sahab, it seems that you are sitting close to him. On the contrary, Javed Sahab called Kaifi Sahab a rebel. Faiz himself has said: Kaifi Sahab is a rebel soldier of poetry.

Although Javed Akhtar also said that if ghazals of Kaifi Azmi were not ghazals then they would have been statues. Overall, Javed described Kaifi Sahib as an angry young man of poetry. As soon as the word Angry Youngman came, Javed was asked that your dialogues made Amitabh Bachchan an Angry Youngman. Javed said – Amitabh is not made, he is born.

After that the talk went on of translation. A shocking thing came to the fore on the translation of Ghazal. Translation is weak. Shabana said- Actually, translation is like pouring a perfume from one bottle to another. The fragrance just wanes through this! Javed said- All tigers are animals, but all animals cannot be tigers.

The book edited by Gulzar Sahib was also inaugurated on the stage of JLF.

Well, immediately after Javed, Gulzar Sahab had a session. The occasion was the inauguration of his editing book. Got to hear some of his poems and some from that book. Like – said about the poet- ‘He waits for the next night sitting for hours at night’. Like- ‘Course books don’t look good, because they don’t cause pain.’ Then said an emotional poem-

I am sitting covered with najms, without najms I am naked from inside, many injuries are hidden inside, when I get hurt, I hide them by wearing new najms. There are other poems – Day is a basket of Madari and night is its cover, I felt Madari as God, when I was young, God seems like Madari now, when I grow up and see his feats. And in the end… From the old Nazm, I get a smell of those quilts, which are dried in summer….
