The study, conducted by Agriwatch for Indian Agribusiness Systems Ltd and Roller Flour Millers, said wheat production would remain at 100.3 million tonnes despite unseasonal rains. Before the unseasonal rains, this production was estimated to be around 10 crore, 40 lakh tonnes. This means that this year unseasonal rains may reduce wheat production by 10 to 13 lakh tonnes.
Claims of more production than last year
Central government officials are claiming that there will not be any significant reduction in wheat production due to unseasonal rains. Subedh Singh, additional secretary in the food ministry, says, “Whichever figure you take, we are confident that this year’s wheat production will be about 50 to 55 lakh tonnes more than last year even after unseasonal rains.”
He said there was a difference between the wheat production estimated by the government and the industry last year. However, there are some similarities in crop estimates this year.
