What Prostate Cancer Is- The Condition Ustad Rashid Khan Was Battling

Ustad Rashid Khan, the renowned music maestro, passed away recently in a Kolkata hospital where he had been receiving treatment for prostate cancer, a condition he was battling for a long time. Now, prostate cancer is one of the top five leading cancers in males in India and is more common in the elderly population who are 65 years and older. According to Dr Karthik K Prasad, who is a Consultant Surgical Oncologist, at Gleneagle Hospitals Kengeri, Bengaluru, “Early detection is the key and there is a need to raise awareness about the disease in the community and family physicians. Prostate cancer survival depends on its stage. Life expectancy is very high if detected early.”

But before knowing the benefits of early detection, let’s know what prostate cancer is all about.

What Is Prostate Cancer?

The prostate is a gland found only in males. It makes some of the fluid that is part of semen. Prostate cancer begins when cells in this gland start to grow out of control.

According to the American Cancer Society, “Almost all prostate cancers are adenocarcinomas and develop from the gland cells in the prostate (the cells that make the prostate fluid that is added to the semen).”

Other types of cancer that can start in the prostate include:

  • Small cell carcinoma (small cell neuroendocrine carcinoma)
  • Other neuroendocrine tumors (including large cell carcinoma)
  • Transitional cell carcinoma
  • Sarcomas

Symptoms Of Prostate Cancer:

Talking about symptoms, Dr. Prasad said, “Most prostate cancer patients have no symptoms to symptoms like difficulty urinating, frequent urination, new onset of erectile dysfunction, presence of blood in urine, and low back ache.”

Adding to it, Dr. Manohar Bhadrappa, who is a Consultant – Urology & Renal Transplant Surgeon, at Manipal Hospitals, Sarjapur Road said, “One notable indicator is frequent urination, especially during the night. Additionally, a weakened urine stream or difficulty initiating urination may signal potential issues. Blood in the urine or semen, though less common, should not be ignored.”

Detection And Treatment:

Most of the prostate cancers in India are diagnosed at an advanced stage. One of the best ways to detect prostate cancer early is through screening of males above 50 years with no prostate cancer symptoms.

Talking about this, Dr. Manohar Bhadrappa said, “Detecting prostate carcinoma in its early stages is crucial for effective treatment. Regular screenings, including PSA (prostate-specific antigen) tests and digital rectal exams, are essential for early detection. Awareness of these signs, coupled with routine check-ups, empowers individuals to address potential issues promptly, improving the chances of successful treatment and maintaining overall prostate health.”

The five year survival rate is almost 100% in early-stage disease. Nearly 80% will survive their cancer for more than ten years,” added Dr. Prasad.

Lastly, Dr. Krishna Kiran Kannepally, who is a Senior Surgical Oncologist, at Kamineni Hospitals, Hyderabad concluded by saying that prostate cancer, a sneaky foe, needs us to be watchful. Just like a skilled conductor knows the ins and outs of a musical piece, men should take charge of their health by getting regular check-ups and taking preventive steps. In the quest for a long and healthy life, let men take control of their health like master musicians, recognising the importance of early detection and preventive actions, making sure the tune of life is full of energy and lasting strength.
