Wants to work with passionate directors who can think differently of me

Known for his iconic role of Krishna in the 1992 show Mahabharat, Nitish Bhardwaj has been very selective about his projects. The actor was last seen in Samantar, which also marked his web debut. Earlier, he was a part of Sara Ali Khan’s debut film Kedarnath in which he played her father. Bhardwaj says though he is not picky about his work, directors need to come up with something that is worth exploring. “There are not many directors who can take the risk to give me roles, something that I did in Kedarnath or Mohenjo Daro. Filmmakers need to see the actor in me and then offer a role that is almost like a casting coup. It takes courage from you and I want to work with such courageous directors who can think of me from a different perspective.”

He goes on to say that run-of-the-mill work did not spark his imagination. “I am always trying to find different characters. It channelizes and drives me. Nine rasa (navara) are written in the Natyashastra of Bhārtamuni and different combinations of these rasas can throw off the possibilities of many characters and hence someone needs to come and challenge me.”

The actor will soon be seen in the second season of Samantar. When asked about what excites him to take up this character, Bharadwaj says, “It was the genre of psychological thriller that was one of the biggest challenges. My character is almost like a mystery man whom I have never played before. Through this series many people are discussing Bhagya, Bhagya and Karma. And it also starts a new idea in the society.”

Apart from Mahabharata, Bharadwaj has also acted in other mythological shows like Vishnu Purana and Ramayana in the past. But he is not a fan of the new age mythological show. “I don’t see much in it. There is a huge amount of money in television and OTT. So producers and directors should not get lost in visual extravagance and opulence and forget research and scripting in the process. After all, these things Makes the human mind insensitive,” the actor says, adding that it is only the emotions of the characters that people will be able to relate.

“Beyond a point, things like six-pack abs are not going to work and move the audience. These are all presentations and there is no end to it. It is only emotions that drive the audience and this is where filmmakers need to connect.”
