Valentine’s Day 2024: What Are Indian Women (Not) Up To When It Comes To Online Dating?

Valentine’s Day 2024: The trend of digital romance is marking a seismic shift in the country’s traditional matchmaking ethos. Amidst a backdrop of vibrant festivals and age-old customs, the emergence of dating apps has ushered in a new era of courtship, revolutionising the way young Indians navigate the complex terrain of love and relationships in the 21st century.

Swipes dictate the romance destiny in this world of online dating, and it’s the women who often lead the charge here, meticulously selecting their matches.

In the run-up to Valentine’s Day, Redditors talked about how Indian women are notably selective.

On a few Reddit threads, users could be seen discussing that Indian women prioritise quality matches, and this leads to a unique online dating dynamic. They are portrayed not just as choosy participants but as custodians of their digital affection, navigating through a sea of potential matches with a focus on quality over quantity. This behaviour was seen as less about being selective and more about a nuanced interplay of cultural values, societal expectations, and the quest for deep, lasting connections amid transient digital interactions.

One Reddit thread posted what it called “the original race wise stats” with an insight that “Indian women least likely to reply back to Indian men on dating apps”. The chart also found that Indian men are “the least chosen”, while “Indian females are the most picky”.

Take a look at how the users reacted:

Someone crossposted “Indian women least likely to reply back to Indian men on dating apps”. Here are the original race wise stats – Indian males are the least chosen. Indian females are the most picky.

Commenting on the thread, one user posted: “…Yes, Indian women are picky – because in my opinion – most of us (both men and women) have been trained by the society in that way. Where dating is still looked through black tinted glasses. And more from women, where certain of them, have been groomed to expect a lot.”

Another user said Indian girls “get advantage of skewed gender ratio” and the “not so selective nature of guys”.

Some sounded hopeful, believing “good things will come our way”.

The trend, meanwhile, sparks a debate — are Indian women merely acting as gatekeepers of their digital hearts, or just making informed choices in the landscape of superficial encounters?

Regardless of the perspective, it’s evident that Indian women are actively shaping a new narrative in the realm of online dating. What do you think?
