Uttarakhand Police to reward people who help road accidents victims

In a bid to encourage good Samaritans, the Uttarakhand Police initiated a scheme to reward those who help victims of road accidents. The prize money ranges from Rs 5000 to 25,000.

According to Director General of Police (DGP) Ashok Kumar, this scheme will prove to be a milestone in saving the lives of people injured in road accidents.

A person will be able to claim the reward if they have done the following:

1. Provide first aid to a person in a road accident.
2. Take the road accident victims to a hospital on time by doing relief and rescue work.
3. Transport the injured person to a hospital by private vehicle in the absence of availability of an ambulance in a road accident.
4. Donate blood to the injured person in a road accident or make arrangements for blood donors with the respective blood group by promoting blood donation.
5. Financially help the person injured in the accident.
6. Provide effective assistance/contribution to road accident prevention efforts.
7. Give wide publicity in relation to good Samaritans through advertisements, social media, print media, etc. (Rewards mentioned in points 6 and 7 will be maximum 10 percent only)

Under this scheme, assistance will be given at three levels in the state.

1. At the Police Headquarters level, by the Director General of Police (DGP), Uttarakhand – first prize up to Rs 25,000, second prize Rs 10,000 and third prize up to Rs 5,000.
2. By the Director of Traffic at the level of the Directorate of Traffic with the first prize as Rs 5,000, the second prize as Rs 3,000 and the third prize up to Rs 2,000.
3. Senior/Superintendent of Police at district level with first prize Rs 3,000, second prize Rs 2,000 and third prize-amount up to Rs 1,000.

An application for the reward for the work done by a good Samaritan can be submitted to the authorities through WhatsApp, e-mail, social media or a report in person. The facts related to the victim’s assistance may also be submitted if available.

According to a report, the death toll in the state of Uttarakhand mostly consists of people who lost their lives in road accidents. The general public is hesitant to come forward to help the injured because of the fear of being questioned by the police. Thousands of people lose their lives in road accidents if they do not get treatment at the right time.
