Uttar Pradesh elections: BJP registers first win from Mant constituency in Mathura | Agra News – Times of India

AGRA: Eight times winner, BSP’s Shyam Sunder Sharmawho was considered invincible from Mant constituency in Mathura district, was defeated by BJP’s Rajesh Chaudhary by a margin of over 9,000 votes.
Chaudhary, who is the party’s state spokesperson, bagged 83,958 votes followed by BSP’s Sharma who got 74,378 votes.
Sharma, who switched parties off and on, started his winning streak from Mant constituency on a Congress ticket in 1989. In the 2012 elections, he lost to RLD’s Jayant Chaudhary. However, within two months, a by-poll was held after Chaudhary stepped down and retained his Mathura’s Lok Sabha seat. Sharma won the by-poll from Trinamool Congress ticket.
In the last assembly elections in 2017, Sharma had jumped the fence before the polls and joined BSP and had won with a margin of only 432 votes from RLD candidate, Yogesh Chaudhary who got 65430 votes.
Though the BJP won all the seats in Mathura district in 2017, they had lost Mant. The Samajwadi Party had put up Akhilesh Yadav’s close aide Sanjay Lathar and BJP had fielded Rajesh Chaudhary against him from Mant to stop Sharma’s victory march.
Mathura (city) seat was retained by UP cabinet minister Srikant Sharma, who again defeated Ex CLP leader Pradeep Mathur with a margin of over 1 lakh votes. Mathur, who had won four times from here, polled only 49,056 votes against Sharma who bagged 1,58,859 votes.
In Chhata, UP cabinet minister, Laxmi Narayan Chaudhary has also retained his seat by a margin of 48,498 votes from RLD’s candidate Tejpal Singh who got 75,466 votes.
In Baldeo, Pooran Prakash, sitting MLA from BJP, won the seat by a margin of 15,353 votes. RLD candidate Babita Devi polled 73,746 votes. In Goverdhan constituency, Thakur Meghshyam Singh (BJP) bagged 59,679 votes, defeating Raj Kumar Rawat of BSP, who polled 33,095 votes.
BJP MP from Mathura Hema Malini said that she was always confident that the BJP will make a historic win in UP, with Yogi Adityanath forming the government in 2022 also. “Yogi led government has done a lot of development across the state and this victory is the result of it,” she said, adding that people have trust in his government. Women are feeling secure under the Yogi government and that is why they voted for him”.
