After an apparent assassination attempt on former US President Donald Trump, President Joe Biden on Sunday appealed for the country to “unite as one nation” following the fateful attack.

The President also mentioned that an independent security review of the lead-up to the attack is being ordered by him.

After receiving a briefing on the investigation in the Situation Room, Biden delivered brief remarks from the White House.

He also said he has directed the probe to be “thorough and swift,” and asked the country not to “make assumptions” about the perpetrator’s motives or affiliations.

Biden, who strongly condemned the attack on his political opponent, said he has also directed the US Secret Service to review all security measures for the Republican National Convention which begins Monday in Milwaukee.

Biden urged Americans not to make assumptions about the motive of the shooter, who was killed by the US Secret Service.

“Unity is the most elusive goal of all,” he added while urging the public to strive for it.

The President spoke briefly Sunday afternoon saying he and his wife Jill Biden were praying for the family of the person killed at the rally and that he was sincerely grateful that Trump is “doing well and recovering.”

“There’s no place in America for this kind of violence or any violence for that matter,” Biden stated.

US President Joe Biden and former presidents Barack Obama, George W Bush and Bill Clinton condemned the assassination attempt on Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump at an election rally in Pennsylvania, saying there is no place for violence in America.

Trump, the 78-year-old former president, was injured on Saturday after being shot in the ear during an apparent assassination attempt.

The attacker killed one spectator at the rally, and two others were critically injured. The male attacker was shot and killed by a member of the Secret Service.
