Vinesh Phogat Disqualified From Paris Olympics
Ahead of her women’s 50 kg freestyle final, grappler Vinesh Phogat was disqualified from the Paris Olympics after being found overweight. The 29-year-old was left medal-less within hours of coming close to an unparalleled gold. International rules stipulate that any wrestler found overweight at the time of weigh-in ends up at the bottom of the final standings. “She was found to be overweight by 100 gm this morning. The rules do not allow this, and she has been disqualified,” said an Indian coach. On Tuesday night, August 6, she scripted history by becoming the first Indian woman wrestler to reach the gold medal bout in her category.
Delhi Liquor Policy Case: Manish Sisodia Walks Out Of Jail After 17 Months
Senior Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader and former Delhi Deputy CM Manish Sisodia walked out of jail on August 9. His release comes after 17 months in custody without trial, following the Supreme Court’s bail grant on the same day. The AAP leader was arrested for his alleged involvement in corruption and money laundering cases linked to the controversial Delhi excise policy scam. A large gathering of AAP supporters assembled outside Tihar Jail holding aloft flags and cheering loudly to welcome Sisodia.
CBI Takes Over Probe, Files Case Against Coaching Center CEO into 3 IAS Aspirants Death
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) took over the case regarding the deaths of UPSC aspirants at a coaching centre in the national capital. Three students had died by drowning after the basement of the IAS training academy in Old Rajender Nagar was flooded on July 27. The probe agency has booked the owner of Rau’s IAS Study Circle’s CEO, Abhishek Gupta, under various sections, including causing death by negligence, culpable homicide not amounting to murder, voluntarily causing hurt, common intention and more. Moreover, Rau’s IAS Study Circle had declared compensation of Rs 50 lakh each for the families of the three UPSC aspirants following the tragic incident.
BJP Allies Support Waqf Amendment Bill
Shiv Sena, NDA allies JD(U), TDP and the LJP supported the Waqf (Amendment) Bill that was introduced in Lok Sabha on August 8. The political parties claimed that the bill was aimed at bringing transparency in the functioning of the Waqf Board and was not an attempt to interfere with the running of mosques. The TDP and the LJP also backed the bill being sent to a parliamentary committee for further examination. Minority Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju introduced the Waqf (Amendment) Bill. After the opposition parties objected to its provisions, he also proposed to send the bill to a joint parliamentary committee.
Aman Sehrawat Becomes India’s Youngest Olympic Medallist
Aman Sehrawat scripted history with his bronze medal win, becoming the youngest-ever Indian to win an Olympic medal. The young Indian added his name within the stars with a dominant 13-5 win over Puerto Rico’s Damien Toi Cruz in the Men’s 57 kg Freestyle event, clinching the sixth medal of the Paris Olympics for India. With his incredible win, Sehrawat also overtook the title of the youngest ever medalist in India from iconic Indian Olympian, Indian badminton ace PV Sindhu, who won silver at the age of 21 years, 1 month and 14 days at Rio 2016.
