PRAYAGRAJ: As many as seven policemen on Magh Mela duty have tested positive for Covid-19 infection between January 1and 10. They had arrived on the Mela campus from different parts of the state to perform duty.
Furthermore, testing of employees, officials of various government departments and members of different organisations who have arrived for Magh Mela duty or are setting up camps on Mela campus has been intensified.
The Mela police tested around 2,000 policemen from January 1 to 10 and seven of them came out positive. They have been kept in isolation camps till recovery.
Superintendent of police (Magh Mela) Dr Rajiv Narayan Mishra told TOI, “As many as seven policemen have tested positive for Covid-19 infection in the past 10 days. They have been kept in isolation so that other policemen and visitors are not infected.”
He said that all the seven policemen had complained about mild symptoms. “Around 5,000 policemen, ranging from constables to additional SP, who have been assigned duty on Mela campus, would be tested.”
He, however, claimed that all preventive measures have been initiated and wearing of masks has been made mandatory for all the policemen on reserve police line campus, office, Mela police stations and police outposts. Mela police are also focussing on sanitization on the campus.
Meanwhile, officials of the health department have started testing employees, officials of various government departments and members of different organisations who have arrived for Magh Mela duties or setting up camps on Mela campus since January 1. “Health department teams are conducting testing of people through both antigen and RT-PCR methods on Mela campus. Around 300 to 400 samples are being collected everyday,” they said.
With lakhs of devotees, pilgrims, seers and saints arriving for the Mela beginning January 14 on the occasion of Makar Sankranti, Mela police are insisting on Covid-19 protocol, including wearing of masks, social distancing and use of sanitizers.
The number of visitors is likely to climb manifold on six main snan days — Makar Sankranti, Paush Purnima, Mauni Amavasya, Basant Panchmi, Maghi Purnima and Maha Shivratri.
“With January 14 inching closer, the intensity of testing and collection of samples will be increased manifold in coming days and more health teams would be deployed on Mela campus for collection of samples,” said a health official, adding that all five sectors in Magh Mela will have separate static Covid-19 testing centre/primary treatment centre and besides antigen testing facility.
