UP elections: Akhilesh Yadav to file nomination from Mainpuri’s Karhal on January 31, BJP yet to field candidate against him | Agra News – Times of India

AGRA: Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav will file his nomination papers from Karhal constituency in Mainpuri on Monday. He is contesting his first assembly elections from Mainpuri, the stronghold of Samajwadi Party. Interestingly, BJP has not declared its candidate against Akhilesh from Karhal constituency till date.
Rumours were rife that the BJP may field someone from Yadav’s family – Mulayam Singh Yadav’s daughter-in-law Aparna Yadav, who recently joined the BJP in Delhi ahead of the upcoming Uttar Pradesh election. The last date of filing nomination for the third phase is Tuesday.
Detailed coverage
When contacted former MP Tej Pratap Yadav, confirmed that Akhilesh will file his nomination papers on January 31. He said that all preparations have been completed and other candidates from the party will also file their nomination papers the same day.
BJP’s Braj region president Rajnikant Maheshwari said that the candidate will be declared by Sunday evening but he refused to disclose the name.
Though Aparna Yadav was not available for the comments, one of her family members told TOI that it was highly unlikely that she would contest against her brother in law. He said, “she would do whatever the party decides but putting her against Akhilesh would not be in the minds of BJP leadership keeping the sensitivity of their family relationship in mind.”
Karhal has been an SP stronghold since 1993 with only one exception — in 2002 the seat went to the BJP. Karhal will go to the polls in the third phase on February 20.
According to Samajwadi Party leaders, Yadavs comprise approximately 14% votes in the state. In Mainpuri, Yadavs account for about 3.5 lakh voters, the biggest chunk among the major castes; out of this 1.44 lakh voters exist in Karhal constituency. Shakya, with a population of 1.48 lakh, are second, followed by Jatavs (1.23 lakh), Kshatriya (1.12 lakh), and Muslims (over 61,000).
