UP: Death Toll Due To Kanpur Tractor Accident Rises To 26, Station In-Charge Suspended

New Delhi: The death total rose to 26 while several others were injured after a tractor-trolley overturned and fell into a pond near a village in Uttar Pradesh’s Kanpur district on Saturday The pilgrims were returning from Chandika Devi temple in Fatehpura.

“A total of 26 people have lost their lives & others are injured. The pilgrims were returning from Chandika Devi temple in Fatehpura. The injured people have been sent to Hallet hospital. The investigation is underway. Rescue work has been completed,” DM Vishak G Iyer Kanpur said, as quoted by news agency ANI.

“After getting the info, we immediately reached the spot. The injured have been sent to the hospital. 26 people have died. The station in charge has been suspended for negligence. The investigation is on, if anyone else’s fault is found, action will be taken,” ANI quoted TS Singh, SP Outer Kanpur as informing.

On Saturday, a tractor-trolley overturned and fell into a pond near a village in Uttar Pradesh’s Kanpur district. According to an official, the incident happened in the evening near Bhadeuna village, which is within the Saar police station’s jurisdiction.

The devotees were heading back to Unnao. According to the official, the tractor-trolley was on its way to Ghatampur after the passengers attended a “mundan” ceremony at Fatehpur’s Chandrika Devi temple.

After the collision, the police arrived at the scene and collaborated with the villagers to begin the rescue operation. The injured were immediately transported to the community health centre for treatment, reported news agency ANI.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday offered his condolences to those who lost their lives in the accident in Kanpur and announced an ex gratia payment from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF) of Rs. 2 lakh to the surviving family members of the deceased and Rs. 50,000 to the injured.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath also expressed his condolences following the accident and assured those injured of proper treatment, wishing them a speedy recovery.
