UP assembly elections 2022: BJP ally Apna Dal’s MLA Chaudhary Amar Singh quits, to join Samajwadi Party | Lucknow News – Times of India

LUCKNOW: The wave of defection by party MLAs, hovering around the BJP, hit its ally Apna Dal (Sonelal) as well on Thursday as its MLA from Shohratgarh (Siddharthnagar), Chaudhary Amar Singh, resigned from the primary membership of the party.
This was the first resignation by a lawmaker from Apna Dal(S).
After sending his resignation to the party national president and Union minister Anupriya Patel, Singh went to meet SP chief Akhilesh Yadav. He will join the SP on Friday afternoon.
Singh said he felt suffocated in the BJP as rights of Dalits and backwards were tampered with. “The corruption was at its peak and we never felt like a public representative,” he told TOI.
The 50-year-old first-time MLA hails from Kurmi caste which is the core vote bank of Apna Dal (S).
His defection came even as Anupriya sought more tickets for her party candidates. In 2017, the party had contested in 11 seats and won nine.
Anupriya’s mother Krishna Patel, who is also president of Apna Dal, is part of the Bhagidari Morcha floated by SBSP chief Om Prakash Rajbhar, an ally of the SP.
The Union minister is in a bitter feud with her mother over the legacy of her father and Apna Dal founder, late Sonelal Patel.
